Conventions of a Short film - Narrative structure

Narrative structure

A good example of how narrative structure in short films can differ from normal feature length movies is the movie ‘Double take’ by Toa Stappard. Its structure is interesting because it combines the elements of both linear and non-linear narrative with there being sort of two simultaneous narratives which only really come together in the last scene of the short. What’s interesting is that the narrative is circular with the criminal eventually becoming a victim.

A short film that presents a narrative structure that is typical among such films is ‘Sold’ by Nadia Attia. It has a linear structure that presents a real time ‘Snapshot’ of the day. The movie is subjective due to time constraints which additionally cause the movie to adapt a circular narrative which goes back to the ladle – it is a simple plot, which is the most appropriate for a short film. Also the restricted point of view that the audience gets allows for an element of surprise to appear – which would otherwise be extremely hard to achieve in a short film.

The analysis of the narrative structure (above) has led us to realise that we are limited to quite a simple storyline and it made it clear to us that what we are meant to do is produce something new and different and just a compressed version of full feature film. Our short film would consist of an idea or a theme that is currently relevant to British society and which can be easily told and put across without large cost in terms of time or money. That's what Short Films are most appropriate for.
