Short Fim Conventions- Themes

Short films have many different themes, but allot of them deal with social issues that we the audience will understand and relate to. Short films will rarely have an overly glamorous cast with an unrealistic story line; this won’t be possible anyway due to the low budgets. The film “Gravity” by Colin Hutton deals with the issue of youth and gun crime. The film showed how by being careless with something so dangerous innocent people can be affected in this case it was a young child we was on the swings, this theme is very relevant to what we see daily on the news in Britain. Another short film that had an interesting theme was called “sign language” by Oscor Sharp, and it was about the people in places like Oxford Street who hold advertising signs up and they don’t get noticed by anyone. It also showed that people can move on and follow their dreams, as the main character went on to flying small aeroplanes. These types of themes are simple but effective because they are realistic; Directors may do these themes to get certain morals across which may get lost in a feature length film.

For our film to relate to the British audience that we are targeting we will need to try and create a theme they will understand or they have experienced themselves, if we don’t then people won’t like our movie. We could even try and show them a different point of view of something they're familiar with; this will make the audience think and also create social some awareness like in “sign language”.
